Members were saddened to learn of the death of John Tillyer, the founder member of the Club, on 23rd. April 2008. John was instrumental in forming the club whilst he was a serving officer in the Thames Valley Police. Originally a section of the Police Sports & Social Club, it became open to members of the public. When it eventually outgrew its origins the move to neutral premises at the TA Centre was organised by John. The club was reformed with a proper constitution and committee as the NMRC. For 10 years John had run the club single handed and in recognition of this was unanimously made an Honorary Life Member.
He was one of the organisers of the very successful Newbury Model Shows held at the Race Course in the late 70s, co-ordinating the activities of all the participating local model clubs and societies. This experience was really appreciated when he took over the running of our 2006 annual exhibition at the eleventh hour.
John was a very good modeller and particularly enjoyed making buildings. An example of his handiwork is the derelict barn complex on the front of the current Exdale layout. His interest was American HO and several of his layouts were to be seen at the Clubs Annual Exhibitions over the years.
John was always the voice of reason and common sense at meetings and his opinions sought on contentious matters. His good humour and fund of anecdotes will be sadly missed on Club nights. We have lost a valued member and friend.
